Grande maniera
   The grande maniera (grand manner) was a term used by Nicolas Poussin to refer to the painting method he created based on his use of the classical Greek modes of music to express different moods. He developed this Theory of Modes in the 1640s, known from a letter he wrote to Paul Fréart de Chantelou explaining it. For him, the Phrygian mode was well suited for violent scenes such as battles, the Lydian for tragedies, the Ionic for joyous renditions such as festivals and bacchanals, and the Hypolidian for religious subjects. With this, Poussin systematized the depiction of emotions through facial expressions and body movement, resulting in well-planned and, at times, formulaic representations that, contrary to his intentions, lacked the expressiveness of his earlier paintings.
